A Course in Miracles

You Are Here

You are always here. You can never not be here.

"Of course I'm here, the mind says. What's the big deal? Where else would I be?"

The big deal is this: every desire, every complaint, every sorrow, every fear, every knot of stress, all of it, is essentially a statement that says "I don't want to be here."

Yet here is the only place we ever are.

The disbelieving, disoriented mind counters, "So are you saying we should just sit idly by, tolerating discomfort, unfairness, distress?"

Absolutely not. But if we want peace that doesn't depend on circumstances arranging themselves just so, we have to start from here. Everything else is fantasy, however reasonable it feels.

But we rarely start from here. When things go wrong we look to the world, to other people, to the body. For me to be happy, this needs to change. And so we keep trying to fix sorrow and fear where they don't live, on the level of events, and wonder why they keep returning.

They return because we've forgotten where we actually are.

To be here is not a location. It is am-ness. Existence. Presence. The bare fact of being before a single circumstance is added or taken away.

As the Course puts it, "We say 'God is,' and then we cease to speak, for in that knowledge words are meaningless."

That is here. The holiest of all the spots on earth, and the one place we were never able to leave.

How to get there?

No steps required. Already, and forever, you are here.
